How the Numbers Work
The formula
Track size (MB) = Bitrate (kbps) × Length (minutes) × 60 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,024
Example: 128 × 3.5 × 60 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,024 = 3.28 MB per track
Divide your drive's formatted capacity by that figure to get the track count. Track length matters more than people expect — a library of six-minute progressive rock tracks holds barely half as many songs as one of three-minute pop singles at identical quality.
Why a 128 GB drive only holds 119 GB of music
Drive capacities are printed in decimal gigabytes of 1,000,000,000 bytes, while your computer and most music players count in binary gigabytes of 1,073,741,824 bytes. - 128 kbps — the long-standing default. Acceptable through earbuds or a car stereo, audibly thin on good headphones.
- 192–256 kbps — the sweet spot. Most listeners cannot reliably tell 256 kbps AAC from lossless in a blind test.
- 320 kbps — transparent for practical purposes, and 2.5× the size of 128 kbps for a difference few can hear.
