Why a 64 GB Drive Only Holds 59.6 GB

Decimal on the box, binary on the screen

Drive manufacturers count a gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Windows, and most file managers, count it as 1,073,741,824 bytes. The bytes on the drive never change — only the label does. Divide the advertised figure by 1.0737 to get what your computer will report:

Formatted GB = Advertised GB × 1,000,000,000 ÷ 1,073,741,824

Example: 64 × 1,000,000,000 ÷ 1,073,741,824 = 59.60 GB

Roughly 7.4% of the printed capacity disappears at every scale. That is why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB and a 2 TB drive about 1.82 TB. See the TB to GB converter for the full table.

Small files waste more space than you expect

Filesystems allocate storage in fixed clusters, typically 4 KB on NTFS and exFAT. A 1 KB text file still occupies a full 4 KB cluster, so ten thousand tiny files can consume several times their combined size. If you are storing large numbers of very small files, treat the calculator's answer as an optimistic ceiling.

The reverse problem affects flash media: USB sticks and SD cards reserve a portion of their cells for wear levelling and bad-block replacement, which is already accounted for in the formatted figure your computer reports.

How to measure your own average file size

Select the folder, open its properties, and divide the total size by the file count. Windows and macOS both show both numbers in the same panel. If the total is in kilobytes, the KB to GB converter will turn it into a figure you can compare against drive capacities; for megabyte totals use the MB to GB converter.

Why does my 1 TB drive only show 931 GB?

Manufacturers count 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Your operating system divides by 1,024 at each step, giving 1,000,000,000,000 ÷ 1,073,741,824 = 931.32 GB. Nothing is missing and nothing is faulty — the same bytes are simply being labelled two different ways.

How many photos fit on a 32 GB SD card?

About 7,630 JPEGs at 4 MB each, or roughly 1,220 raw files at 25 MB. A 32 GB card formats to about 29.8 GB. Shooting raw plus JPEG together roughly halves those numbers.

What size USB stick do I need for my files?

Total your files, add 10% headroom, then round up to the next drive size and add 7.4% to cover the decimal-to-binary gap. A 17.6 GB folder needs a 32 GB stick, not a 16 GB one, because 16 GB formats to only 14.9 GB.

How much free space should I leave on a drive?

Five to ten percent. Filesystem metadata, cluster rounding on small files and wear levelling on flash media all consume space, and a drive filled to capacity slows down and becomes more likely to throw write errors. Set the reserve field above to match.

Do thousands of small files take more space than their total size?
